Hong Kong Children’s Chinese Language and Reading Development Study

The “Hong Kong Children’s Chinese Language and Reading Development Study” is a research program led by Prof. Fan CAO (Department of Psychology, The University of Hong Kong) and Dr. Shih Ju HSU (Educational Psychologist). This study focuses on various factors influencing Chinese language and reading development among children. The aim is to gain an in-depth understanding of children’s language and reading growth, thereby providing scientific guidance for educators to optimize teaching strategies for children with potential learning difficulties.

Current Project: Children's Reading Development and Intervention

As part of the "Chinese Language and Reading Development Study Project of Hong Kong Children," this integrated project aims both to investigate the mechanisms underlying reading difficulties during children’s language and reading development, and to develop and evaluate effective interventions for dyslexia. We examine the relationship between oral language, reading behavior, and brain activation using language assessments and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The project not only follows a cohort of children over time—with follow-up assessments in the second year to continuously observe changes in their language and reading development—but also provides targeted intervention for children who have been diagnosed with, or are suspected of having, dyslexia or reading and writing difficulties. Through professional intervention programs, we track changes in children’s reading and writing abilities and brain function throughout the intervention process, with the goal of gaining a deeper understanding of the developmental language network and improving support for children with reading challenges.
